FORGING A LEGACY
Headquartered in Erie, Pennsylvania, REED boasts a remarkable legacy spanning over 128 years, supplying top-tier pipe tools and vises to the professional trades. Founded in 1896 by Carl Reed and three partners, the venture incorporated into Reed Manufacturing in 1899. Their diverse product range, including pipe wrenches and plumbing supplies, expanded to encompass scales, bicycles, and vises. The iconic ivy-covered building at 1425 West 8th Street, erected the same year, stands as a testament to REED's enduring presence.
In 1902, Reuben Wright, an entrepreneur from Westfield, NY, acquired the company, having amassed his fortune during the Gold Rush. Under the leadership of his three sons, REED witnessed transformative growth. His sons Paul Darling Wright and Ross Pier Wright assumed key roles. Reuben's great-great grandsons, Scott (Company President and Chairman of the Board) and Mark (Retired and a Board Member), are actively involved to this day. Five generations of Wrights have provided a great place to work and exceptional contributions to the community.
REED tools played a part in the construction of the Panama Canal. Recognition followed in 1915 at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, where REED bench vises earned a gold medal, and REED pipe dies secured a bronze medal. The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, distantly related, utilized a REED vise in their Dayton bicycle/aviation shop. During both world wars, REED served as a defense contractor, producing essential items such as stocks, dies, and pipe cutters in the Great War, and wrenches, turbine buckets, and airplane engine mounts in World War II. The company expanded further in 1947 by establishing a second plant at 421 West 12th Street, later sold in 1985, paving the way for REED's continued global expansion.
From its early years, REED cultivated international relationships, exporting products to Europe and beyond. By 1993, exports extended to 75 countries, a number that has since grown to over 100. Based in its historic building at 1425 West 8th Street, REED stands as an enduring Erie landmark, a symbol of innovation, resilience, and global impact.
REACHING THE WORLD
Operating in 100+ countries, REED is a leading manufacturer of pipe tool solutions worldwide. Collaborating closely with trusted distributors, our sales representatives are dedicated to educating tradespeople about jobsite-safe, time-saving pipe tool options. The distribution network business model employed by REED is rooted in the belief that good distributors significantly enhance the customer experience by offering invaluable services:
- Local distributors excel in problem-solving, providing services such as product recommendations, order expediting, and parts identification for REED tools.
- Facilitating direct communication, distributors can arrange visits by factory representatives, ensuring personalized support and guidance.
- Even our online retailers, seamlessly blending digital convenience with a physical presence, operate brick-and-mortar stores keeping tools closer to customers and holding authorized REED distributor status.
At REED, we exclusively sell our products through traditional distributors for the value they add for tool-users. This strategic choice ensures that local distributors become go-to sources of information on both existing and new, high-quality REED tools, contributing to a seamless and enriching customer experience.
